New York City ... February 14-17, 2009

New York City is about a 5-1/2 hour drive from our home in northern New York.  For several years, we would go there one or two times a year to see Broadway shows.  Since we haven't been since 2003, we decided that a visit there was necessary.

We drove down on Saturday, February 14.  We usually stay in a hotel in North Bergen, New Jersey.  It is just off the Lincoln Tunnel and with mass transit, it is a quick, and inexpensive shot into Manhattan.  We don't have to worry about parking our car in the city and, because we either walk or take the subway, we usually get quite a bit of exercise.

On Sunday morning, we took the bus into the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  We spent the day in Manhattan which included the afternoon at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway to see Mamma Mia.  Marcia's cousin Melissa moved to Manhattan last fall.  We had contacted her earlier in the day and coincidentally, her parents, Uncle Dan and Aunt Linda, were down visiting her.  We all met for dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe at Times Square.

Using this slideshow ... click the "stop" button to put it in manual control. That will pause the show. While paused, you can click the left or right arrow buttons to manually go through the slideshow, either backward or forward. Clicking the "play" button will put it back in automatic mode where pictures will advance about every nine seconds.

We bussed back in on Monday and took the subway down to Battery Park on the southern end of Manhattan.  We took a ferry boat out to Liberty Island and saw the Statue of Liberty.  Since the 9/11 attacks in 2001 the top has been closed to the public.  They are talking about opening it up again so that people may climb to the top, but at this point, you can only go up about mid-way.  It's 156 steps and not for the faint of heart!  If anyone is thinking of doing this, you should be advised that you have to go through airport style security on the mainland.  Once you get to Liberty Island, we had about an hour wait to get into the monument ... and this was in February.  Also, you can't take backpacks, bags, food or drink up with you.  They do provide lockers to store your belongings at a nominal cost.  It was $1 when we were there.

Afterward, we took the subway up to Chinatown and had a late lunch at the Wing Wong Restaurant on Lafayette Street.  The egg rolls were close to the best we've ever had.  Make sure they understand what you ordered.  I asked for Sesame Chicken and got General Tso's!  We jumped back on the subway and went back to Times Square where we did a little shopping before returning to New Jersey.

Another of Marcia's cousins, Janet, and her husband Justin, live in New Jersey.  Their place is only a few minutes from our hotel.  In fact, they know the area well because they belong to a gym just across the highway from the hotel.  They came over to the hotel for a few hours that evening and we had a nice visit with them.

We got up Tuesday morning and drove back home by way of Dexter where we stopped for the weekly jam session.
